Best Microgreens for Chickens & Rabbits

Best Microgreens for Chickens & Rabbits

If you're growing microgreens at home, you might be wondering: Can my chickens or bunnies enjoy them too?

The answer is yes and they’ll love them!

Microgreens are packed with nutrients, fresh flavour, and hydration perfect for backyard hens and gentle herbivores. But not all greens are safe or suitable.

At Seed to Stem, we only use seeds that are available, reliable, safe and New Zealand only seeds!

Here’s a list of the best (and safest) microgreens to share with your furry and feathered friends.

Great for Chickens & Rabbits

These are nutritious, safe, and loved by most animals:

💡 Tip: Always introduce new greens slowly and in small amounts.

Seed

Why Its Great

Broccoli – De Cicco

Mild and rich in vitamins A, C, and K — supports immunity. Hens peck at it happily, and rabbits enjoy small amounts.

Peas – Fiji

Sweet, tender, and full of plant protein. Bunnies go crazy for these, and chickens love the juicy shoots. One of the best all-around pet greens!

Kale – Red Russian

Soft, slightly nutty, and packed with calcium and iron. Safe for both chickens and rabbits in moderation. Grows beautifully in trays.

Beetroot – Bull’s Blood

Deep red stems and sweet leaves — chickens adore them! Rich in iron and antioxidants. Feed rabbits small portions due to natural sugars.

Cabbage – Red Acre

Crunchy, mild, and full of antioxidants. Safe for both species and adds beautiful colour to their diet.

Mizuna – Red & Green Mix

Peppery but mild enough for pets. Adds texture and variety to meals. Chickens love it; rabbits can have small amounts.

Wheatgrass

A natural detoxifier and energy booster. Chickens scratch and nibble it like grass. Rabbits enjoy it as an occasional treat.

Alfalfa

Very mild, high in vitamins and minerals. Often used in rabbit feed — safe and healthy in moderation.

⚠️ Good for Chickens But Not for Rabbits

Some greens are too spicy or strong for bunnies, but chickens handle them well:

Radish – Red Arrow

Spicy and zesty helps stimulate digestion and may support natural parasite control in hens. Avoid for rabbits too hot for their systems.

Rocket (Arugula)

Peppery and bold chickens love the kick! Packed with nutrients. Best avoided for rabbits.

Cress – Common

Fast-growing and spicy great for adding heat to chicken diets. Not recommended for rabbits.

Chickens love the spice; it can even help with digestion and parasite control. But avoid these for rabbits, their sensitive tummies don’t handle heat well.

Not Safe for Chickens or Rabbits

One green on our list isn’t suitable for animals:

Coriander (Cilantro) → While safe for humans, coriander microgreens can cause digestive upset in some animals and isn’t commonly fed.

We recommend enjoying this one yourself it’s delicious in salads and salsas!

When in doubt, stick to mild, leafy greens.
